The Chinook Monitoring Program:

Sliammon treaty negotiations are guided by the following statement: "The Sliammon people have a right to all sea resources." As Sliammon people we also recognize the need to respect conservation issues. Chinook stocks are in decline and before accepting numbers on allocations, it was agreed by the parties to conduct an assement of the stocks.

A Chinook Monitoring Treaty Related Measure (TRM) was initiated in June of 2004 in order to assess Chinook stock in Sliammon's fish area. Chinook stocks have been in decline for a number of years, this continues to be a cause for concern for Sliammon people.

As a part of the TRM Sliammon developed a log book program for fish harvesters to record their catches. This information is vital for the for the future of Sliammon government in the area of resource management. The Chinook Monitoring Program in now complete and data gathered through the study will assist negotiators and techinicians in negotations.
