Fisheries

Sea life has always held great cultural, spiritual, and economic value for the Sliammon people. The opportunity to have a say as to how fish, shellfish and aquatic plants are mangaged within our Traditional Territory takes us back to our traditional role as watchmen of the sea and its resources.

As we reclaim our role as watchmen of the sea, there are two fish related Treaty Related Measures that will help the Sliammon Nation in ho ho jo thut (getting ready)- The Chinook Monitoring Program and the Joint Fish Committee.

Both the Chinook Monitoring Program and the Joint Fish Committee will depend on the knowledge of Sliammon fish experts to complete the work. The Sliammon Salmon Enhancement Society and the Sliammon Aboriginal Fishing Strategy are in the process of creating a united Sliammon fish authority which will provide a more streamlined approach to dealing with fisheries issues in the Sliammon territory.
